Certified or Just Green? What EU Bike Brands Check in Your Fabric

EU bike brands now vet fabric on three questions: certified materials, proof for the order, and how the mill treats people. How to answer with documents.

Short answer: a European brand's buyer now asks three things before ordering bike bags: what certified materials you offer, how you prove the chain, and how you treat people. Slogans do not pass. Certificates do. We source bluesign-approved and GRS-certified fabrics from Taiwanese mills - and hand over the documents with the order. Send your checklist; we will answer it in a week.一
Sustainability stopped being a marketing page. For EU bike brands it became a purchasing requirement - and your fabric is part of their report.
Here is what buyers actually check, in their own words, and what a real answer looks like.
Why the question arrived
Germany's Supply Chain Due Diligence Act, in force since 2023, requires larger companies to document human-rights and environmental due diligence in their supply chains. The EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (2024) extends that logic across the single market.
A brand cannot mark a supplier “sustainable” because the catalogue is green. It needs documents. That is why the first meeting is often about certificates, not prices.
The three questions - and what a real answer sounds like
Question 1 - What certified materials can you offer?
Answer with standards, not adjectives. Two matter most:
• bluesign focuses on chemical safety in production - what goes into the fabric and the water, managed at the input stage.
• GRS (Global Recycled Standard) covers recycled content plus chemical and social criteria.
Our Taiwanese mill partners list BLUESIGN, GRS, CLEAN by Design, Higg Index and ISO 9001/14001/45001 on their certification page. We bring those options to your bag: recycled yarns, solution-dyed fabrics, water-based PU lamination.

(Figure 1: The three questions and the answer each one needs.)
Question 2 - Can you prove it for my order?
A certificate on a wall is not a chain. Ask for three things:
• the certificate's scope - which material it covers;
• its validity dates;
• the transaction certificate that links the certified material to your batch.
We attach the certificate pack to the quotation, so your compliance team sees the same documents we do.
Question 3 - How do you treat people?
Human rights due diligence is labour standards in practice: working hours, wages, safety, grievance channels. The evidence is documentary too - the mill's ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety) and social-responsibility reporting, plus our factory's audit records.
It is a file, not a feeling. Brands accept a file.
Why Taiwanese mills help your audit
Taiwan's fabric industry is vertically integrated: yarn, weaving, dyeing and finishing in one chain. A shorter chain means fewer unknown links in your brand's report.
Mills such as Fulltide supply global brands and publish their certification list - BLUESIGN, GRS, CLEAN by Design, Higg Index, ISO 9001/14001/45001 - on their safety page. When your buyer asks “who made the fabric”, the answer has documents behind it.

One more question cargo brands ask
Cargo bike brands add a fourth test: will the bag last as long as the bike?
Their machines are built for a decade of daily use - frames that stay compatible for years, parts that can be replaced instead of the whole product. Bags should match that logic: replaceable buckles, reinforcement where it rubs, materials chosen for years, not seasons.
That answer is not a certificate. It is a design decision - and it is what keeps a cargo brand's customers loyal.
What to do this week
Ask your supplier for three items:
• the material certificate, with scope and validity;
• the transaction certificate for your order;
• the labour and safety evidence behind the mill.
If any is missing, the brand's audit will find it later - at your cost.
Sending your brand's sustainability checklist to suppliers? Send it to us with your drawing. We will answer the three questions with documents, name the certified material options, and quote the sampling plan from there. FAQ
Are you GRS certified?
We are a bag factory - the certification lives with the material and the mill. We source GRS-certified fabric from certified mills and pass the documents with the order, so the claim stays attached to the material.
Is bluesign the same as GRS?
No. bluesign focuses on chemical safety in production. GRS covers recycled content plus chemical and social criteria. Brands often ask for both, for different reasons.
What if my brand has no questionnaire yet?
Start with the three questions above: materials, proof, people. They are what auditors ask first.
Limitations
• Certification scope and validity must be checked per material and per order; documents expire.
• We pass certificates issued to the material and the mill; we do not claim certifications we do not hold.
• Requirements differ by brand and market; confirm your buyer's exact checklist before quoting.
